Off to Canada, Mexico, or some Central American locales? You’re quite likely to come across Type B sockets.
This type of socket accommodates a three-pronged, grounded plug with two flat, parallel pins and a round grounding pin, very similar to the Type A plug.
Features of Type B Sockets
A distinctive aspect of Type B plugs is the holes at the end of the two flat pins. These holes help the plug to click securely into the socket, ensuring it stays snug and less likely to dislodge. Additionally, the plug features a U-shaped grounding pin.

Additional Features for Type B Sockets
Type B sockets and plugs can handle up to 15 amps and operate within a voltage range of 100 to 127 volts.
In certain areas of Central and South America, Type B sockets are rare. People sometimes cut off the grounding pin to make plugs fit, but this is strongly discouraged due to potential risks.
Dimensions
The pin dimensions are precise: the flat pins are about 1.5 millimetres wide and range from 15.9 to 18.3 millimetres in length. The grounding pin extends 3.2 millimetres longer than the other two pins.
Using Type B Sockets
Type B sockets are specifically designed for Type B plugs, but Type A plugs also fit. However, it’s not possible to use Type B plugs in Type A sockets due to the grounding pin.
You’ll find Type B sockets in places like Jamaica, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and parts of the Caribbean.
Before you head off, it’s wise to check if your destination uses these sockets. You can easily do this using the search function on this site, so you can nab the right travel adaptor if needed.
