Socket Type K

When you’re off to Denmark or Greenland, you’ll likely come across Type K sockets. These are also common in a few countries across Africa and Asia.

Type K sockets are designed for a three-pronged, grounded plug that includes two round pins and a U-shaped grounding pin. This setup is somewhat similar to the Type E socket, but the main difference is that the grounding pin is on the plug itself, not the socket.

Features of Type K Socket

A notable feature of the Type K socket is its compatibility with Type C plugs. However, it’s important to bear in mind that while Type E and F plugs can technically fit into a Type K socket, they don’t properly ground. This makes their use somewhat dicey as it can lead to unsafe conditions. So, while you might be able to plug them in, doing so isn’t recommended without proper grounding measures.

Type K sockets and plugs are designed for up to 16 amps and operate within a voltage range of 220 to 240 volts.

Dimensions

Type K plugs are precisely standardized, with pins having a diameter of 4.8 millimetres and a length of 19 millimetres. The spacing between the two power-carrying pins is also 19 millimetres. The central grounding pin is a bit shorter at 14 millimetres long and has a diameter of 6.5 millimetres.

Using Type K Plug

Type K sockets are predominantly used in Denmark and Greenland. Type C plugs integrate seamlessly into these sockets, while Type E and F plugs can also fit but without establishing a grounding connection.

However, it’s important to note that using Type E and F plugs in a Type K socket is not recommended due to the absence of a safe grounding connection. While Denmark might consider transitioning to Type E or F standards in the future, Type K remains the standard for now.

If you’re unsure about the plug types used at your destination, it’s a good idea to bring a travel adaptor or use the search function (top right) on this website to check.

The Necessity of a Travel Adaptor

Bringing a suitable travel adaptor compatible with Type K sockets is strongly advised to mitigate any potential risks.

Without the correct adaptor, you might face issues such as being unable to charge your devices, damaging your charger, or in extreme cases, causing short circuits, electrical shocks, or even fire hazards. To ensure a smooth and safe journey, make sure you’re well-prepared with the right adaptor.

A reliable travel adaptor for Type K sockets is essential.
